A Whole New Mind (Chapter 7, 152~168)


1. What surprised me ?
- I was surprised by the fact that how empathy can save one person's life. One doctor listened to her patient and saved him, while the other doctor did not. This shows me that doctors do need an empathy.

2. What did you already know??
-I knew that there are some people, who studies other people's face(face reading skills). It is really cool and I also want to learn it. I want to look at other people's face and read their feelings; thoughts.

3. New Words

squirm - to feel or display discomfort

inclination - a tendency toward a certain condition, action, etc

innate - existing in one from birth

intuit - to know by intuition

bipedal - a two-footed animal

snide - derogatory in a nasty, insinuating manner

scaffolding - an elevated platform on which a criminal is executed, usually by hanging

dissembling - to give a false or misleading appearance to

tad - a small child / a very small amount

lugubrious - gloomy, sad

langushed - to be or become weak

obscurity - the condition of being unknown

intrigued - to achieve or earn by appealing to another's curiosity

autism - characterized by impaired communication

malfunction - failure to function properly

aphasia - the loss of a previously held ability to speak ot understand spoken or written language, due to disease or injury of the brain.

compromise - the result of such a settlement

microcosm - a little world; a world in miniature

therapeutic - of or pertaining to the treating or curing of disease

accredit - attribute to

intonation - the pattern ot melody of pitch changes in connected speech

untenable - incapable of being defended, as an argument

rejoice - to be glad

attunement - to bring into accord, harmony

4. What changes will you make ?
-I will pay more attention to others' facial expressions, because I like to tease other people yet I do not know when to stop. I am sure that their facial expression will tell me when to stop it. :)

- The dark side of empathy?.... what if we use Empathy for bad things??

7. Word of the day
- attention

because... it might sounds weird but to me Empathy is like paying more attention. If we want to stand in others' shoes, and to see with their eyes, we have to pay attention to them. If we want to read their facial expressions, then we have to pay attention to their face. That is why, my word of the day is "attention".
